Choosing the Right Pliers for Every Task
The right tool for the work
Familiar in every workshop. Different in every task.
Pliers are among the most familiar tools in any workshop, yet choosing the right pair can make a significant difference to the quality, speed and safety of a job.
A tool designed for gripping will not necessarily cut cleanly, while a cutting tool may offer little control when bending or positioning small parts.
The most useful approach is to match the shape of the jaws, the length of the handles and the cutting capacity to the work in front of you.
01 · Start with the material
Match the tool to what you need to hold.
Before selecting a pair of pliers, consider what you need to hold, bend, pull or cut.
Soft wire, electrical cable, metal fasteners and plumbing fittings all place different demands on a tool. Fine components require precision and controlled pressure, while thicker materials may need wider jaws, stronger pivots and longer handles for additional leverage.
Using an undersized tool can damage both the material and the pliers. An oversized tool may feel awkward and make delicate work harder to control.
02 · Combination pliers
A practical choice for everyday repairs.
Combination pliers are a practical choice for general household and workshop tasks. Their jaws usually include a flat gripping area, a serrated section for round objects and a cutting edge near the pivot.

For regular maintenance, a well-balanced pair of combination pliers is often one of the most versatile tools to keep within reach.
Long-nose pliers
Built for confined spaces and careful positioning.
Long-nose pliers have narrow, extended jaws that can reach into spaces where standard pliers cannot.
They are particularly useful when working inside electrical boxes, behind appliances or around small mechanical assemblies. The narrow tips also provide greater control when forming loops, positioning wire or retrieving dropped components.
Because the jaws are slim, they should not be used for heavy twisting or high-force gripping. Excessive pressure can bend the tips and reduce alignment.
03 · Cutting pliers
Use a cutting edge designed for clean results.
Diagonal cutters and end-cutting pliers are designed specifically for cutting rather than gripping.
Diagonal cutters are commonly used for wire, cable ties and small metal components. Their angled cutting edges allow close access to the work surface. End cutters approach the material from above, making them useful for trimming protruding wire, removing nails and cutting close to a panel.
Always confirm that the cutting capacity is suitable for the material. Hardened wire can damage cutting edges that are intended only for copper, aluminium or soft steel.
04 · Water-pump pliers
Adjustable grip for fittings, pipes and larger fasteners.
Water-pump pliers have adjustable jaws that can open around pipes, fittings and larger fasteners. Their angled teeth provide a secure grip on rounded surfaces, making them useful for plumbing and maintenance work.
The jaw opening should be adjusted so the handles remain comfortably spaced when pressure is applied. If the handles are too close together, control is reduced. If they are too far apart, the tool becomes difficult to hold securely.
To avoid marking finished fittings, use protective jaw covers or place a cloth between the jaws and the surface.
Look beyond jaw shape
A dependable tool should feel stable before force is applied.
Comfort and construction matter just as much as the basic tool type.

- Evenly aligned jaws
- Clean, undamaged cutting edges
- Handles that remain comfortable under pressure
- Grips that are securely attached
- A finish that resists corrosion during normal use
Longer handles provide more leverage, while shorter handles offer greater control in confined spaces. Neither is automatically better; the right choice depends on the task.
Let the tool’s leverage do the work.
Pliers are most effective when force is applied steadily. Sudden twisting or excessive side pressure can damage the pivot, distort the jaws or mark the workpiece.
Keep your wrist in a neutral position and allow the tool’s leverage to do the work. When a fitting will not move, check whether a wrench, socket or specialist tool would provide better contact.
Pliers should not be used as hammers, pry bars or substitutes for properly sized spanners.
05 · Maintain the tool
Keep the jaws, pivot and cutting edges clean.
After use, wipe the jaws and pivot clean. Dust, adhesive and metal fragments can interfere with movement and accelerate wear.
A small amount of light lubricant at the pivot can help maintain smooth operation.
06 · Store with care
Protect alignment before the next repair begins.
Store pliers in a dry toolbox or organized rack so the cutting edges and jaw tips are protected from impact.
Choosing the right pliers is less about owning every available style and more about understanding how each tool is intended to work.
With the right jaw shape, size and leverage, everyday gripping, cutting and positioning tasks become cleaner, safer and easier to control.
